SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night
SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night is a four-part series that takes a look at what happens behind the scenes of "Saturday Night Live", while also looking back at its history. I had the pleasure of joining BGSTR's team to design and animate the graphics for the show.
Main Title Design & Animation
Since each episode had its own unique director, every title sequence was approached differently. Some followed a straightforward design, while others required more exploration to find the perfect look.
Document Treatments
For the document treatments, the Cowbell episode follows a more traditional approach, maintaining a clean and classic look. In contrast, the Season 11 episode takes inspiration from microfiche to fit within the episode's look and feel.
Type Explorations
I was responsible for the type explorations on the Cowbell and Written By episodes. For Cowbell, we chose TT Norms Pro for its flexibility and geometric qualities. For Written By, we explored a variety of typewriter fonts based on the director’s request and ultimately landed on the classic American Typewriter.
Photo Sequences
For the photo treatments, we kept all images black and white for Season 11 and Written By, while preserving as much of the original photos as possible for Audition. For Cowbell, we took a more expressive approach, adding energy and character to the images.
