When Will Our Memory Run Out?

Over the past years, a lot of new technology has been introduced, making it hard not to enter a state of future shock—a constant feeling of overwhelm and exhaustion. Constantly being bombarded with more information has been proven to affect our memory and cognition. It's hard not to think about a time when, just like our computer, we won't be able to keep up, or in other words… When will our memory run out?

Concept Development

This project emerged from conversations with my peers, where we shared a common feeling of being caught in an endless game of cat and mouse with new technology. It felt like we were constantly chasing after the latest innovations, never quite able to keep up. Intrigued by this experience, I began researching the impact of these rapid technological changes on individuals and society. What I discovered was startling—these shifts are even affecting our memory.

The Process

I quickly gravitated toward the idea of glitching and distorting footage as a way to represent the impact on memory. I chose to use pixel sorting and distortion to manipulate the trails a person leaves behind, symbolizing memories fading while the present remains clear. To achieve this effect, I utilized TouchDesigner.
